Stand behind the choking person. Make a fist. Place it above their navel. Grasp with the other hand. Thrust inward and upward. The air trapped in the lungs pushes the object out. Choking is the fourth leading cause of accidental death. This move is the counter.

  • For children under one year, the technique is different: use back blows and chest thrusts. Look up the infant version.
  • You can perform a version on yourself using the back of a chair pressed against your upper abdomen.
