Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for 20 minutes. No ice. No toothpaste. No butter. No cream. Most home remedies for burns trap heat inside the skin and make the injury worse. The correct response is water and time. Nothing else.

  • Do not pop blisters. They protect the skin underneath while it heals.
  • If the burn is larger than the person's palm, or if it is on the face, hands, or joints, go to a hospital.
