The Complaint Ladder

Every industry has somebody above it

The order of escalation when a company will not fix its own mistake.

Complaints move in steps and almost never skip one. First the company's own grievance officer, in writing, with a reference number. Then the sector's ombudsman or regulator. Then the consumer commission. Each rung expects proof that you tried the rung below it, which is why the written record matters more than the anger does.

  • Banks and insurers answer to the RBI and IRDAI ombudsman schemes, telecom to TRAI, and everything else to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
  • Keep dates, reference numbers, and screenshots from the very first message. A complaint with a paper trail settles far faster than one without.
