A passport is not permission to enter another country. It is your own government identifying you, requesting safe passage for you, and promising to receive you again. That is why police verification is part of issuing one, and why the booklet legally belongs to the issuing state rather than to you.
- Apply long before you need it. Police verification is the slow step, and it moves faster when your address matches your other documents.
- Many countries require at least six months of validity remaining at the time you enter, not at the time you book. Check the expiry before booking anything.
