India's PIN code arrived in 1972 so that sorters would not have to read handwriting in a dozen scripts. The first digit names the region, the next two narrow it to a sorting district, and the last three name the delivery office. The number is not a label on a place. It is an instruction to a machine.
- An address is infrastructure. Where addresses are vague, deliveries, ambulances, bank accounts, and property records all get harder at the same time.
- Write yours in the order the system reads it: house, street, locality, city, state, PIN. The six digits alone get it to the right office.
