Electricity is made and used in the same instant. There is almost no warehouse. Every second of every day, an operator somewhere matches generation to demand within a fraction of a percent, or the frequency drifts and equipment starts shutting itself down. The grid is not a network of wires. It is a balancing act that never stops.
- Frequency is the tell. India's grid runs at 50 hertz. If demand outruns supply the frequency sags, and machines across the country begin protecting themselves by disconnecting.
- This is why blackouts spread. One failure pushes load onto its neighbours, which overload and trip in turn. The 2012 North India blackout reached about 62 crore people.
