Habits — The compound interest of behaviour
Front
Habits
The compound interest of behaviour
An action repeated until it runs without deciding to do it.
Back
Cue, routine, reward. That is the habit loop. You see the cue. You do the routine. You get the reward. Over time, the loop becomes automatic. A 1% improvement repeated daily compounds to a 37x gain over a year. Habits are the infrastructure beneath discipline. Build the system and the outcomes follow.
- To build a habit, attach it to something you already do. "After I brush my teeth, I will read for 5 minutes." The existing habit is the cue.
- To break a habit, remove the cue or change the routine. The loop needs all three parts. Remove one and it breaks.
