A First Information Report is free to file. The police cannot refuse to register it. If they do, you can send it by post to the Superintendent of Police. The FIR starts the legal process. Without it, nothing moves. Knowing this right matters because many people do not know they have it.

  • An FIR can be filed for any cognisable offence: theft, assault, fraud, cybercrime, and more.
  • You can also file an FIR online in most states through the state police portal or the NCRP (National Cybercrime Reporting Portal).
