The headline is not the story

Reading news with an eye on who wrote it, and why.

Every headline is a choice made by an editor. It is written to get clicks, not to summarise. Reading past the headline is a skill. Five questions help: Who wrote this? Why? What is missing? Who benefits from this story? Where does the information come from?

  • Check the source. A study published in a medical journal carries more weight than a claim in a blog post.
  • If a headline makes you feel strong emotion, pause. Emotional headlines are designed to bypass thinking.
