Notice the exits when you enter a room. Note who is around you. Trust the feeling that says something is off. Awareness is not fear. It is the habit of paying attention to your surroundings. It works in traffic, in crowds, and on the street.

  • Cooper's colour code: white (unaware), yellow (relaxed alert), orange (focused alert), red (action). Most people should aim for yellow.
  • Try this exercise: walk into a room, look around for five seconds, close your eyes, and describe what you saw.
