"I feel [emotion] when [event] because [reason]." This is called an I-statement. It reports your experience without accusing the other person. Accusations trigger defence. Reports invite conversation. The structure works because it keeps the focus on what happened, not on who is wrong.

  • Example: "I feel left out when plans are made without me because I want to be included." No blame. Same message.
  • Practise the format on something small before you need it for something big.
