The Recovery Position

One turn, one life

A safe position for an unconscious person who is still breathing.

0027 · The Primer28 / 53

An unconscious person who is breathing: roll them onto their side, bring the top knee forward, tilt their head back. Gravity keeps the airway open and prevents choking. One position. No equipment. No training beyond knowing how. It is the simplest move with the highest stakes.

  • Never move someone you suspect has a spinal injury. Call for help and keep them still.
  • Practise the position with a family member or friend. Knowing it in theory and doing it are different.
